And now for something completely different.
Who am I? And who we are is being in the present moment, in this very moment, right now.
I've been writing about the investment world for a very long time. It's always fascinating; there's always something different going on. I like to compare it to playing chess. The pieces are familiar, but they're always in different positions. And every time you start a game, you're not entirely sure where it's going. You may have a plan. You may have an opening gambit, but things don't always turn out as you as you thought.
Similarly, it's not unlike playing backgammon. The board and the pieces are familiar but, in this instance, we introduce the element of luck, which is the roll of the dice. Now if we understand odds and probabilities that can work very much in our favour, and people with this mathematical bent tend to do very well at the game. But even so, the roll of the dice is still a fickle thing. The odds and probabilities by definition aren’t always in our favour. And we've only got to look around the world for the last two months, let alone the last two years, to see that trying to understand what is going on with all the many variables is impossible. It's like playing backgammon with an infinite number of dice.
So how do we cope with the infinite variables. To quote the American jazz composer, Sun Ra, “The possible has been tried and failed. Now it’s time to try the impossible.” And impossible for a lot of people is actually going back to basics and asking a very simple question, “Who am I?”
That should get people thinking, but it tends to be put into the subconscious because there are far too many “important” things to deal with like work, socialising, watching the box, eating junk food and playing endless games and just doing stuff that doesn't allow us to be who we are. And who we are is being in the present moment, in this very moment, right now.
And that's what I'm going to write about in future. This is an introduction and along with all the investment pieces - I'll continue to write those and give my opinion on what's going on in a world - but I'll also try and weave into that some ideas and suggestions about how we look at ourselves and how we get to that place of peace and ultimately to a place of freedom where we can be whoever we want to be and in doing so make us better investors.
